A DeWalt impact wrench shows up on a lot of wish lists because the yellow and black kit is already sitting in a lot of garages, and a matching impact wrench feels like the obvious next buy. But "obvious" is not the same as "best," and a 160 dollar tool needs to earn its spot next to 13 dollar shop supplies and a 746 dollar Snap-on.
So how does the DeWalt Atomic actually perform once a bolt is on the line and a stopwatch is running? A hands-on comparison put it through the same gauntlet as 12 other impact wrenches, from a 70 dollar Greenworks to a professional-grade Snap-on, and the results are not a simple story of DeWalt winning or losing. It is a story of where a 160 dollar tool actually beats tools that cost far more, and where it does not.
What the testing showed
All of the numbers below come from Project Farm's impact wrench head-to-head, which put 13 cordless impact wrenches through the exact same set of mechanical tests. The lineup included the Milwaukee M12 Fuel, Flex, DeWalt Atomic, Greenworks, Kobalt, Ryobi 1+ HP, Seesii, Avhrit, Ridgid, Skil, Milwaukee M18 Fuel, Makita, and Snap-on, ranging from 70 dollars to 746 dollars.
Each tool went through four measured tests:
- Loosening torque, measured as clamp load on a 3/4 inch left-hand threaded bolt, converted to foot-pounds.
- Lag bolt driving, 30 seconds spent driving a half-inch by 10-inch lag bolt into wood, measured in inches of progress.
- Three lag bolts, timed, driving three 5-inch lag bolts back to back.
- Extraction, timed removal of the same three lag bolts.
The video did not crown a single overall winner or runner-up across every category, and it should not, because different tools won different tests.
Where the DeWalt Atomic actually beat the field
The lag bolt driving test is where the Atomic separated itself. Using a mode built specifically for driving lag bolts into wood, it drove the full 30-second run and finished the deepest of any tool tested, 8.5 inches of progress, described as "a huge positive difference." Neither the Flex nor the Milwaukee M12 Fuel has that dedicated setting, and both finished behind it in that test.
The Atomic also held up well on lag bolt extraction, averaging 2.89 seconds across three bolts, second only to the Flex by about a hundredth of a second, essentially a dead heat at the top of the field.
Where it fell in the middle of the pack
On raw loosening torque, the Atomic produced 23,838 pounds of clamp load on the 3/4 inch test bolt, which works out to about 279 ft-lb. That is a real number, and a useful one, but it landed behind several rivals: the Milwaukee M12 Fuel topped the whole field at 341 ft-lb, the Snap-on followed at 315 ft-lb, and the Flex came in at 305 ft-lb. The Makita, at 247 ft-lb, finished behind the Atomic.
On the timed three-lag-bolt speed test, the Atomic averaged 8.29 seconds, finishing third behind the Flex (7.58 seconds) and the Milwaukee M12 Fuel (7.96 seconds). It was not the fastest tool in the lineup, but it was clearly in the upper half, well ahead of budget entries like the Greenworks, which averaged 21.34 seconds on the same test.
The wider field, for context
The spread across all 13 tools was enormous. The Greenworks, at 70 dollars, produced only 8,852 pounds of clamp load (about 104 ft-lb) and struggled through the lag bolt test at just 3 inches of progress. The Snap-on, at 746 dollars, hit 315 ft-lb on loosening torque and posted one of the fastest raw driving times in the field at an average of 9.48 seconds for three lag bolts, but it does not have a dedicated lag bolt setting and finished behind the Atomic on that particular test. Weight varied just as widely, from the Milwaukee M12 Fuel at 3.085 lb up to the Flex at 4.72 lb, with the Atomic sitting in the middle at 3.87 lb.
How to read this for your own purchase
The honest takeaway from this test is that no single impact wrench "won" outright, and that is exactly how you should shop for one. Different tools are built for different jobs, and the numbers back that up.
If you drive a lot of lag bolts (decks, fencing, framing), the DeWalt Atomic's dedicated lag-bolt mode is a genuine, measured advantage over tools that cost more but lack that feature, including the Milwaukee M12 Fuel and the Snap-on.
If raw breakaway torque on stuck bolts and nuts matters most to your work, the numbers point toward the Milwaukee M12 Fuel or the Snap-on, both of which beat the Atomic's clamp-load figure by a wide margin.
If you already own a DeWalt 20V platform, the Atomic's mid-pack torque and top-tier lag bolt performance make it a sensible buy at 160 dollars rather than an obvious downgrade, especially since it beat tools costing 50 to 90 dollars more on at least one measured test.
A few rules the data supports across every impact wrench:
- Torque claims on the box rarely match the tested number directly. Several tools in this lineup performed better or worse than their stated ratings once put under load, so treat marketing torque figures as a starting point, not a guarantee.
- Weight and noise trade off against power in this category. The lighter tools were not always the weaker performers, but the heaviest and loudest tools tended to sit near the top of the torque rankings.
- A dedicated bolt-driving mode can matter more than a torque spec for certain repetitive jobs, exactly as the Atomic demonstrated here.
