Small shop and garage air compressors get judged mostly on two numbers, fill speed and tank pressure, and almost every brand promises the best of both at a price that undercuts the last one you looked at. A hands-on bench test cut through the spec-sheet claims by putting 13 portable compressors through the same fill, pressure, and load checks, and DeWalt came out on top of the whole field.
One correction before the numbers: this particular test did not include a Milwaukee compressor. If you were expecting a direct DeWalt versus Milwaukee showdown, that comparison was not part of this test's 13-brand lineup, and this guide will not manufacture a Milwaukee result that was never measured.
What the testing showed
The figures below come from Project Farm, who bought 13 portable air compressors and ran them through identical fill, pressure, and load tests. The full 13-compressor breakdown is on the air compressor comparison, and every figure here traces to that video.
The lineup covered DeWalt, Husky, Fornax, Fortress, Limodot, Stealth, Vevor, Greteefor, Kobalt, Campbell Hausfeld, Craftsman, Eastwood, and Makita, priced from around 135 dollars up. Each compressor was tested for:
- Time to fill to 100 PSI, along with the amperage or wattage drawn to get there.
- Peak tank pressure, both raw and regulated.
- Cut-in pressure, the point at which the motor kicks back on to maintain tank pressure.
- Calculated CFM between 85 and 95 PSI, the practical output range for most tools.
- Real-world tasks, filling an SUV tire to 40 PSI and running a nailer off the tank.
DeWalt won on overall performance, at the highest price in the test

DeWalt, at 279 dollars, was the most expensive compressor in the field and was named the outright winner. Its own verdict: "It is pretty expensive, but it would definitely be my choice if the budget allows." It claims a notably higher 200 max PSI compared to the 100 to 135 PSI typical of the rest of the field, and it delivered on that claim, regulating down to 137.7 PSI of peak tank pressure, the best of all 13 compressors tested. The trade-off is efficiency: filling to 100 PSI took just over 32 seconds while drawing close to 1,300 watts, the highest energy draw of any brand in the test.
Husky was the strong, less expensive runner-up

Husky, at 159 dollars, well under half the DeWalt's price, was named the runner-up: "a lot less expensive and performed very well in just about every category." It was the fastest compressor of all 13 to fill to 100 PSI, at 30.8 seconds, while using only about 890 watts, far less energy than the DeWalt needed for a similar fill time. Its noise level stayed lower throughout testing, peaking at 79.5 decibels, and its metal silencer design was called out as a durability advantage over the plastic silencers used on most other brands in the test.

Fornax, at 135 dollars, the lowest price mentioned among the top finishers, was explicitly named "definitely a great value buy." It was among the quietest compressors tested, peaking at just 76 decibels, and among the fastest to fill at that point in testing, while including two automatic couplers as a practical convenience feature.
A couple of brands illustrate the risk of buying on spec sheet alone
Craftsman, at 142 dollars, was called out as a poor overall performer despite being very light: the test notes describe it as loud, slow to build pressure, and weak on recovery once air was drawn from the tank, a reminder that low weight alone does not indicate a strong compressor. Makita's entry was, per the test's own framing, the most expensive compressor in the entire lineup, underscoring that a high price tag alone did not translate into the win DeWalt earned; DeWalt's 279 dollar price still finished well below Makita's cost while topping the field on the measures that mattered most.
How to read this for your own purchase
DeWalt's win came specifically from raw performance, higher regulated tank pressure and a higher PSI ceiling, not from being the quietest or most efficient option in the field.
If maximum output and pressure headroom matter most, for running higher-demand tools or larger jobs, DeWalt's tested win justifies its price premium over the rest of the 13-compressor field.
If you want strong performance without DeWalt's price or its higher energy draw, Husky was the tested runner-up, described as performing well in nearly every category at little more than half the DeWalt's cost, plus the fastest fill time in the entire test.
If budget is the priority, Fornax was the explicitly named value pick, combining quiet operation with a competitive fill time at the lowest price among the strongest finishers.
Given that Makita's price did not translate to a win here, and Craftsman's low weight did not translate to strong performance, the safest way to shop this category is by the tested measurements above rather than by price or weight alone.
A rule that applies regardless of brand: higher claimed max PSI often comes with a real energy cost. DeWalt's substantially higher PSI ceiling required the highest wattage draw of any compressor tested to achieve it, a trade-off worth weighing against your actual power source, especially on a jobsite generator or a shared circuit.
