3M Cubitron Won 11 Sandpapers Worn Down for 25 Minutes

Sandpaper is the definition of a commodity purchase until you are 15 minutes into stripping paint off a stubborn surface and the disc in front of you has clogged solid or worn through to the backing. Every brand claims clog resistance and long life, and the per-sheet price swings from 13 cents to over a dollar and a half for what looks like the same abrasive disc.

A hands-on test sanded wood, paint, plastic, and metal with 11 sandpaper brands over a sustained 25-minute session per material, tracking exactly how much material each disc removed as it wore down. That kind of over-time data is what actually separates a disc worth the price from one that clogs and quits.

What the testing showed

The numbers below come from Project Farm, who bought 11 sandpaper brands and ran each through timed wood, paint, plastic, and metal removal tests. The full 11-brand breakdown is on the sandpaper comparison, and every figure here traces to that video.

The lineup ran from Makitoya, a 13 cents per sheet budget disc, up to Diablo's SandNet mesh product at 1.50 dollars per sheet, over 10 times the cheapest brand's price. Other brands included 3M Cubitron, Diablo's standard disc, Tiger Shark, Mirka, Norton, Bosch, DeWalt, and DuraGold. Each disc was tracked for:

• Wood material removal, measured in grams at 5, 10, 15, and a full 25-minute total.
• Paint and plastic removal, each measured over a 5-minute window.
• Post-test metal removal, checking how much cutting ability remained after the wood, paint, and plastic tests had already worn the disc down.

3M Cubitron won on overall performance

3M Cubitron, at 84 cents per sheet, the second most expensive brand tested, was named the overall performance winner. It tied for the best wood removal of all brands at the 5-minute mark at 12 g, and it showed almost no drop-off through the full 25-minute test, finishing with 53 g total wood removed, the best of all 11 brands. It also posted the best paint removal result of any brand at 20 g in 5 minutes with no visible clogging.

Diablo's SandNet was the close runner-up, at the highest price

Diablo's SandNet, at 1.50 dollars per sheet, the most expensive brand in the entire test, finished as runner-up. It tied 3M Cubitron for the best wood removal at 5 minutes, and even after the full 25-minute test it was still removing 9 g of material, described as "still very impressive." Its own summary in the test: "I also like the Diablo SandNet, but it is the most expensive."

Diablo's standard disc was named the best value

A separate, much cheaper Diablo product, its standard sanding disc at just 36 cents per sheet, was explicitly named the best value pick: "the Diablo sandpaper seems like the best value, and I've definitely been buying the wrong one." It took the lead in wood removal from Makita at one point in testing and posted 18 g on the paint removal test with no visible clogging, the best result among the standard, non-premium brands in the lineup.

Several mid-priced and premium-priced brands clogged badly

DeWalt, at 65 cents per sheet, finished near the bottom of the field overall despite a relatively high price; it removed the least wood of any brand at the 5-minute mark, at 8 g, and struggled badly with clogging on both the paint and plastic removal tests, posting the worst plastic removal result of all 11 brands at just 4 g. Makita's Italian-made line, at 66 cents per sheet and the third most expensive brand tested, moved into last position on wood removal, finishing with only 25 g total after the full 25 minutes.

How to read this for your own purchase

The spread in this test was not simply expensive versus cheap; two different Diablo products landed at opposite ends of the price range and both performed near the top of the field, while a couple of mid-to-high-priced brands clogged and underperformed.

For the strongest overall performance regardless of price, 3M Cubitron backed up its price with the best wood removal total and the best paint removal result in the entire test.

For the best balance of price and performance, Diablo's standard sanding disc, at roughly a third of 3M Cubitron's per-sheet price, was explicitly named the best value and beat several pricier competitors on both wood and paint removal.

If money is genuinely no object and longevity matters most, Diablo's SandNet stayed close behind 3M Cubitron on every measure and was still cutting material after the full 25-minute test, at the cost of being the most expensive sheet in the lineup.

A couple of rules the data backs up regardless of brand:

• Price did not reliably predict clogging resistance. Several mid-to-high-priced brands, including DeWalt and Makita's premium line, clogged and underperformed cheaper competitors.
• Match the disc to the material. The same brand that led on wood removal was not always the best on paint or plastic; check the specific task if you are optimizing for one material over another.
