Work gloves are one of those purchases where the label does most of the selling. "Cut resistant," "impact protected," "enhanced grip," every pack promises the same three things, and there is rarely an easy way to check any of those claims before you have already worn a hole through the fingertip. A five-pack from a big box store can run 14 dollars; a single pair of premium cut-resistant gloves can run over 20.
A hands-on test of seventeen brands measured exactly the properties the marketing claims: grip strength, cut resistance, puncture resistance, impact protection, wear resistance, and finger flexibility, all on the same rig. The results are a genuinely mixed bag, and the cheapest gloves in the test did not lose.
What the testing showed
The numbers below come from Project Farm, who bought seventeen brands of work gloves and ran them through identical grip, cut, puncture, impact, and abrasion tests. The cheapest gloves in the test scored the best overall
G&F, priced at $14 for five pairs ($2.80 per pair), the cheapest brand in the lineup, posted first-place results in three separate categories: best wear/abrasion resistance (61 sandpaper passes before failure, best of any brand), best impact protection (only 0.59 mm of total damage, best of any brand), and best puncture resistance by a wide margin (8.95 lb on the reinforced index finger, described as running "circles around the competition"). The narrator's own words: "this would definitely be my choice of gloves if it's all about value."

Cut resistance and comfort told a different story
HexArmor, at $18, posted the strongest cut resistance in the test (9.1 seconds before an electric knife cut through), while G&F's cut resistance was a modest 4.3 seconds despite not being marketed as cut resistant at all. Comfort ratings favored different gloves entirely: Mechanix won the flexibility category outright with the least stiff fingers in the test (1.3 lb of bend force, the most flexible glove of the seventeen), a very different strength than G&F's toughness-focused scorecard.
Grip strength did not track with price either
West Chester, at $24, won the grip test outright at 7.7 lb of force needed to slide a weighted steel block, the best of any brand, thanks to silicone-coated fingers. Magid, at $12, came in a close second at 6.7 lb, credited to a textured "nitro grip" palm, but posted the worst impact protection of any brand tested (3.21 mm of damage) despite being marketed for impact resistance, an example of a glove underperforming its own marketing claim.
How to read this for your own purchase
No glove in this test won every category, which matches how gloves actually work in the real world: a glove built for grip trades off against one built for cut resistance, and a glove built for toughness trades off against one built for dexterity.
If your main risk is abrasion, punctures, or general wear and tear, the test's data points hardest at G&F, the cheapest brand tested, which posted the best results in three separate categories including a puncture-resistance score well ahead of every other brand.
If cut resistance is the priority, HexArmor's 9.1-second result was the strongest in the test, nearly double the next-best cut-resistant option, and its marketed 360-degree cut protection claim held up against the actual result.
If you need fine motor control for detail work, Mechanix's flexibility win (1.3 lb of bend force, the least stiff of all seventeen gloves) is the more relevant number than any grip or cut score.
If grip on tools or materials is what matters most, West Chester's silicone-coated palm won the grip test outright, though its cut resistance and puncture scores were unremarkable by comparison.
It is worth noting how much these results likely reflect specific material and construction choices rather than pure brand reputation. G&F's strength across wear, impact, and puncture categories tracked with it also being the heaviest glove in the test at 276 grams, more material generally means more protection, at some cost to dexterity. HandyLandy sat at the opposite end, the lightest glove tested at 74 grams and consistently among the weakest performers on grip, cut, and wear, a tradeoff that makes sense for genuinely light-duty tasks like touchscreen-friendly handling but a poor choice for anything abrasive. If you already know roughly how heavy a glove you want, that alone predicts a lot about where it will land on the protection-versus-dexterity spectrum this test exposed.
A few universal rules the data supports:
- Match the glove to the actual hazard. No single glove excelled at everything, and marketing claims did not always match test results, as Magid's impact-protection underperformance shows.
- Cheap and durable are not opposites. The cheapest brand in this entire test scored the best in three separate categories.
- Check fit and flexibility if you do detail work, since the stiffest gloves in the test scored worst on comfort regardless of their protective ratings.
